AI Risk in Depositories: The Need for Elicitability

Why community institutions should adopt AI deliberately · September 17, 2026 · John Beckwith, Cooper Beckwith, LLC

Abstract

Artificial intelligence is real, compounding, and about to accelerate as models begin improving themselves. That is not a reason to run it into your books and records, and it is not a reason to stand in front of it. It is a reason to be deliberate. From 2006 to 2008, opaque models stacked on leverage produced numbers no one understood and losses no one could locate until it was too late, and community institutions carried real damage.

The lesson has a name. Elicitability is the property that lets you score an answer against the truth, backtest it, and prove it. Generative AI output does not have it: ask twice and get two answers, with no way to reconstruct why. This paper explains why that matters inside a leveraged depository, shows where AI earns its keep today, fraud detection above all, and where it does not, starting with blind underwriting, and ends with ten do's and don'ts a board can act on Monday morning.
